Weight loss transformations often focus on the physical, but 28-year-old Allie Ruby's Instagram is full of honest comments on the mental aspect of weight loss instead.
Like many undergrads with access to all-you-can-eat dining halls, Ruby put on weight during college. When she reached her peak weight of 225 pounds, she realized she had to make a change in her diet and lifestyle. She began making small swaps like ditching cheeseburgers for chicken with cottage cheese, and running as her main form of exercise.
But after losing almost 100 pounds, she still didn't feel like a magic switch had gone off inside. Even after achieving her goal of having a six-pack, she found herself feeling trapped and unfulfilled, and under pressure to maintain her new shape.
It wasn't until she started weight-lifting that she started feeling happier and more fulfilled. Working out became about getting stronger rather than staying lean. As a result, Ruby gained more than 30 pounds back, but this time much of it was in the form of muscle.
Gaining weight was tough mentally, and often felt like "going backwards," she wrote on Instagram, but has helped in her new exercise of choice, powerlifting. She still pays attention to what she's eating, but does so in a less rigid way.
"The past few months I've focused more on mindfulness," she wrote in an Instagram post. "On my state of mind, on my relationship with food, on my training and on my rest."
