Something called a steak-and-egg sandwich should contain steak, right? Well ,according to a lawsuit filed against Dunkin Donuts, the New England-based coffee chain was caught falsely advertising ground beef as steak in the "Angus Steak & Egg" sandwich.
The federal lawsuit was brought forth on behalf of New York resident Chufen Chen, who believes the company owes reparations to its customers for deceiving them, reports Boston.com.
Commercials starring the sandwich from the breakfast menu not only mention steak repeatedly, but are essentially centered on the idea that "steak" is the most important ingredient.
Because the patty is ground beef it's close enough, right? Wrong. The legal definition of steak is a boneless strip or slice of meat of the poultry meat indicated. The "Angus Steak" that Dunkin offers is a mixture of ground beef, fillers, and artificial flavoring. Translation: not steak.
Besides demanding money, Chen requests a court order banning Dunkin Donuts from "describing, labeling, marketing, and promoting" any of its products as containing steak – especially if they do not.
This lawsuit comes at a particularly perilous time for the company as it fights to get its sales back up after a peculiar drop – which Dunkin blamed on the presidential election.
A spokesperson for Dunkin declined comment due to "pending litigation."
