The correct way to pronounce words is a debate that really gets people in the United States heated: you guys versus y'all, Coke versus pop, lightning bug versus firefly. However for most of the differences, there is not a right or wrong answer.
The Ree-sees versus Ree-sis argument is different because there is a right answer. Brought back to life by the recently released third season of Orange Is The New Black, this debate has made it to Twitter, and it's getting ugly.
So let's break it down. There are two pronunciations of Reese's: Rees-EES and Rees-IS. The pronunciations aren't particularly regional, although its easy to imagine that people from similar regions would pronounce the candy similarly.
The only way to officially settle the debate is to take a look at the brand's origins.
According to some Spoon U research, the confection was named after H.B. Reese, and since these are his candy cups, the wrapper dons the name Reese's: which means the candy's name is still confined to the boundaries of the English language.
Meaning, it's Ree-sis.
That's it. The debate is settled. Don't believe us? Check out this Reese's commercial for the new snack mix from earlier in 2017.
The proof is in the pudding folks. This pronunciation goes for all Reese's products. So no it's not "ree-sees piec-ees," it's "ree-sis piec-uhz." It's also "ree-sis puffs" and "ree-sis snack mix."
So go win that argument against your coworker, you deserve it.
