When it comes to visiting a Ben and Jerry's scoop shop, more is more. Who wants a kiddie-size cone when you could be stuffing your face with two scoops — and a house-made waffle cone? Most recently, though, the brand has banned customers from ordering both scoops in the same flavor. But why?!
To stand in solidarity with marriage equality, the ice cream company's Australian branch is drawing a sweet parallel: "Imagine heading down to your local Scoop Shop to order your favorite two scoops of Cookie Dough in a waffle cone," the company explains on its website. "But you find out you are not allowed – Ben & Jerry's has banned two scoops of the same flavor. You'd be furious! But this doesn't even begin to compare to how furious you would be if you were told you were not allowed to marry the person you love."
Well damn. If you weren't already on board, you should be now.
Ben & Jerry's goes on to cite AustralianMarriageEquality.org, which states that 72 percent of the population supports marriage equality but the country's leaders have yet to act. To rally support for equal right for all, Ben & Jerry's is urging its fans to take a stand by signing up on the Equality Campaign's website leading up to the next parliamentary sitting on June 13.
This activism comes as no surprise to us. Ben & Jerry's has never batted an eye about getting political. In the past two years alone the company's founder adamantly supported presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, created a flavor bringing awareness to global climate change, and issued an adorable animated commercial that took aim at xenophobia and amplified a message of unity.
