Generic-brand products carry a mixed reputation: They're a quick way to save money — short of denting cans, Big Daddy-style — but they can also remind you of those four-stripe, shell-toe sneakers you tried to convince your friends were "totally the latest edition Adidas" throughout middle school. Nobody was fooled.

There are certain things you just don't skimp on, and wine seems like one of them (unless it's going into a giant pitcher of sangria, or being used to make pot roast). But Sam's Club has started selling a white wine that was given a 92-point rating by the Beverage Tasting Institute — ranking it higher than many that sell for double its price.

The wine in question is Member's Mark Chardonnay, a slightly fruity, toasty drink that packs a powerful 13.5 percent alcohol by volume. The institute tasted it in December, deeming the wine "exceptional" and awarding it a gold-medal level rating. It recommends sipping it on its own, or with quite the high-low mix of lobster, chicken pot pie, and Hawaiian pizza (the latter thanks to its slight pineapple notes). Get you a vino that can do both, right?

While its listed retail price is $7.99, we found it in the big box store for $6.98, so you might score a bottle even cheaper. And if you have label shame, you could always decant a bottle — or two — in your wine purse, and no one has to be any wiser of its origins. We kid. Mostly.
