Crazy and quirky beer is killing it right now: We've seen chocolate beer, yoga beer, and now suds made with live lobsters. Wait—what?
In Maine—I mean, where else would this be?—at Oxbow Brewery in Newcastle, you can toast to Saison Dell'Aragosta, a lobster-infused, sea-salted beer. It's a gose-like suds concoction that effectively combines dinner and drink pairings. And we imagine it's best enjoyed with a pile of fresh lobster rolls.
Wondering what exactly the shellfish is doing in your suds? The brewmasters make each batch by suspending live lobsters, secured in a mesh bag, over boiling wort (that mash of sugar and yeast that's created at the start of beer brewing) and later sprinkling the suds with sea salt. The result: a light and dry, citrusy summer beer that finishes with a slightly sweet but briny flavor from the lobsters (which are eaten after they've done their job).
The hops heads at Ocbow have produced about 3,000 bottles, which are available at its two Maine tasting rooms and neighboring restaurants and bars. As awesome as this sounds for Mainers and beer enthusiasts alike, that epic 23-pound lobster is probably thanking his lucky stars for living in an aquarium and not a brewery.
