preview for Trying 25 Items From The World's Most Expensive Grocery Store

Whole Foods gets a lot of flack for being unattainably expensive, but in the last few years Erewhon has come on the scene and made Whole Foods feel like the dollar store. It is common to see $21 jars of pesto and $11 for a Matcha latte lining their shelves. We recently went out to LA and spent $400 and we only were able to buy 25 items. After tasting everything we realized that some items are worth the splurge, but some other items were both too pricey and not super impressive in the taste department. These are 4 items we absolutely will not be buying from Erewhon any time soon.

1

Turmeric Chicken Strips, $26/lb

Chicken strips are many Delish editors' favorite comfort food but these were just a major disappointment. They were hardly crispy and the slightly sweet earthiness promised with that yellow-tinge of Turmeric never came through and we were left with bland barely fried chicken that has can't hold a candle to countless frozen options in a normal market.

Bohemian Raspberry Smoothie, $13

We were excited to see the pre-made smoothies were half as expensive as one made to order. And at first, we loved the punchy berry flavor this smoothie had a the beginning. Unfortunately, that faded away to a strong after taste of coconut water. We love coconut water but something about it being used in this application was not working. Go for the fresh stuff at the cafe.

YS Organic Royal Jelly, $35

Royal Jelly has become really popular in health circles for its alleged benefits. Royal Jelly is the food that worker bees make for their Queen and you are meant to have just a 1/4 tsp everyday. After having our first taste we think even that is too much. This truly tasted like a musty basement and there is no level of super-foody-ness that could make us want to try another bite.

Hot Sauce, $12.50

We were super disappointed in this hot sauce. The bottle gives the appearance of an artisan, well-crafted hot sauce but this tasted more like tomato puree than chilis and wasn't all that spicy. As one of our tasters said skip this and "buy two bottles of Tapatío instead."
