8. The Time The Freezer Failed Us
Candace Braun DavisonThe night before Kim Tranell came in to show us how to sketch Taylor Swift's face using buttercream frosting, we baked and frosted two cakes, then stuck them in the freezer so they'd be easier to work with the next day. Little did we know that a bottle of chocolate sauce had sprung a leak, causing it to drip all over the dessert.
We're always happy to have spare cake on hand, but never more so than on this day.
7. The Time We Got Impatient
Joanna SaltzWhen we first tested topping combinations for this round-up of fun ways to trick out caramel apples, we got a little overzealous and started rolling apples in sprinkles, cake and cookie bits the second they were dipped in boiling-hot caramel sauce.
Lesson learned: Give the caramel sauce a few minutes to cool before dipping, so it's not as runny as water, and stick to lighter toppings. (Pop-Tart chunks slipped right off; crumbled pastries stuck.)

6. The Time We Tried to Be Artsy-Cool

I must have missed that memo when I enthusiastically volunteered to recreate Prince George's face in frosting in honor of the regal toddler's birthday. And wound up creating a spot-on Andy Richter/young John McCain/disapproving grandpa cake.
3. The Time We Basically Made Gak on a Stick
Joanna SaltzBlueberry Cheesecake Popsicles sounded like the most refreshing-yet-decadent treat to kick off summer. Too bad they came out of the freezer—after 14 hours, mind you—looking like the gelatinous Nickelodeon toy from the '90s.
Thankfully, these seven Dixie-Cup pops are basically foolproof.

2. The Time We Invented a "Chocolate Condom"
Candace Braun DavisonIf you leave chocolate-covered frozen bananas out too long, the bananas turn slimy—and slip right out of their chocolate shell, prompting one passerby to pop into our test kitchen and ask, "Hey, is that a chocolate condom?" Um, no. Just ... no.
1. The Time We Created A Cookie ... Monster
Candace Braun DavisonWho wouldn't want to eat ice cream out of a chocolate chip cookie bowl?! We'd seen pictures of these beautiful bowls—made from covering the cups of upside-down muffin tins with chocolate chip cookie dough—all over Pinterest, and after trying it out for ourselves, all we can say is, nailed it.
