Costco is a grocery shopper's dream. During a trip to the warehouse, you can easily snag some of your favorite essentials in bulk for a bargain while also discovering new faves. And let's not forget about the food court's iconic hog dog combo meal. Despite these shopping delights, if you told me that I could visit Costco and get a dupe of a dish served at Nobu, a globally-renowned Japanese restaurant, I'd likely ask if you had one too many slices of Tiramisu Cold Brew Coffee Cheesecake.

Well, across Reddit there are rave reviews about Alaskan Leader Seafoods Miso Black Cod. And according to at least one Costco shopper, it's comparable to Nobu's wildly popular black cod with miso. Given these bold proclamations, I knew this was one dish I absolutely had to get my hands on.

Within weeks of coming across the various Reddit threads fawning over Costco's latest seafood delicacy, I had my hands on a box.

What People Are Saying About Costco's Miso Black Cod

On Reddit, Costco shoppers are certainly not shy about expressing their enthusiasm for the fancy fish. One particular thread on the social media platform has received nearly 100 comments on the subject.

When asked how it compares to the Nobu version, one commenter said, "Pretty much identical. We do sushi nights at home and serve the nobu style black cod recipe occasionally. This would be the best substitute I could ever ask for."

"Mannnn it was so good!!! The fish was flaky and thawed out easily...Perfection. I like to make food from scratch, but I would easily serve this to anyone visiting my home," the original poster shared.

"This is the best frozen fish I have ever had, from Costco or anywhere else," another person wrote.

I even had the chance to connect with Sonia, a Costco shopper who was so impressed with the miso black cod that she wants to serve it at her upcoming wedding. Sonia first discovered it because it was marked with the infamous "death star," an asterisk placed in the top right corner of the price tag that indicates your warehouse will soon stop stocking that product. She reveals that she found the fish to be "quite good!"

"We were brainstorming our favorite meals, and miso black cod is absolutely one of my favorite fish preparations. We figured we’d at least give it a try. I’m not certain that it will be available at Costco when we’re getting married, so we haven’t decided if we will push for this or not," Sonia shares with Delish.

As far as comparisons to Nobu's black cod with miso, Sonia admitted that "it’s not exactly the same, but still very tasty and a tiny portion of the cost."

How Costco's Miso Black Cod Compares To Nobu's

Costco's "Family Size" box, which costs approximately $23, includes five individually wrapped pieces of fish. There are four separate cooking instructions: Broil & Bake, Sear & Bake, Air Fry, and Grill. On my first go-around, I opted for Broil & Bake. This was a mistake. The fish lacked color and did not brown at all in the oven.

The second time, I listened to Reddit and went with the air fryer method (400°F for just shy of 15 minutes). Success! The fish was perfectly browned and beautifully flaky. Now this was the miso black cod that was prepared to take on Nobu's finest. The miso sauce lent just the right amount of sweetness and umami punch. And the cod was buttery enough to just melt in your mouth. I did come across a handful of complaints about the size of the fish (6 ounces), but for me, it was so rich that I wasn't thinking about a second piece.

There was one element that turned me off a bit. One out of two of the pieces of cod I sampled had quite a lot of small bones. We're talking between five to six pieces. I understand that this is very much a possibility when dining on fish, but finding that many was a slight turn-off.

Did the cod taste just like the menu offering available at Nobu? Honestly, I think it just has a chance in a blind taste test. Minus the small bones I spotted, it had all the elements of Nobu's that I love: taste, texture, and appearance. Sorry, Chef Nobu Matsuhisa, this was a tough one.

Per Costco's website, it looks like the luxury-for-less product is still available, but it might not be around forever. You'll want to add it to your cart (or wedding plans) ASAP.
