I like my kitchen clean, but I make sure the Clorox steers clear of my food. Sadly, I can't say the same for one brand at the moment. The latest food recall, which affects over 212,000 pounds of liquid egg products, was initiated due to the presence of a cleaning solution containing sodium hypochlorite, a.k.a. bleach. Although this seems startling, the USDA Food Safety & Inspection Service "concluded that use of this product should not cause adverse health consequences, or the risk is negligible."
Cargill Kitchen Solutions produces the affected products, which include Egg Beaters Original Liquid Egg Substitute, Egg Beaters Cage-Free Original Liquid Egg Substitute, Egg Beaters Cage-Free Original Frozen Egg Substitute, and Bob Evans Better’n Eggs Made with Real Egg Whites. The contaminated products were produced on March 12 and 13, 2025. Although they were shipped to Ohio and Texas for distribution in Iowa, Illinois, Arizona, Colorado, and Florida, the USDA says it is possible that the products were distributed nationwide.
The recall is currently only a Class III, which, according to the FDA, includes "a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences." So, while it's not ideal, it's not likely to cause you any harm. However, since you likely don't have drinking bleach on your bucket list, consumers who have purchased the affected products are advised to either throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.
The timing certainly isn't ideal considering the current price of eggs, but I'd rather crack some expensive eggs than eat cleaning products.
