Check your pantries and cabinets because the Food and Drug Administration just announced another recall. And this time, it’s our morning joe. Thousands of pounds of decaf ground coffee are being pulled from shelves due to “mislabeling,” according to the notice.
The product involved is the 12 oz Our Family Traverse City Cherry Decaf Light Roast Ground Coffee. This coffee was sold in 15 states, primarily in the Midwest. SpartanNash, the distributor of Our Family, voluntarily recalled 692 cases of the coffee on March 13. Then, on March 25, the FDA issued a Class II recall for the product. A Class II recall refers to products that may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, or where the probability of serious health consequences is remote.
According to the FDA notice, the product has the following UPC: 070253 11080 and a best-by date before 08/03/25. A statement from SpartanNash, received from USA Today, explained, “All recalled product was already removed from store shelves and destroyed prior to the FDA’s classification of the recall earlier this week.”
While this may sound alarming, it’s a relatively mild recall. As of now, there have been no reported cases of illness or health issues related to the coffee. Additionally, Our Family has assured customers that its remaining products are safe to use: “We are committed to your health and safety, and we follow best practices to ensure the quality and safety of the products we sell. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused,” according to NBC News.
So, go ahead and take a deep breath. I know us coffee drinkers can be a bit paranoid, especially since our creamer was pulled from the shelves just a few weeks ago, but rest assured—everything is fine and dandy.
