One of my New Year’s resolutions was to stop snackin’ but of course, Lay’s had to release a first-of-its-kind chip. Sigh. The chip giant took to Instagram to announce the news: they’re adding a new flavor to their Poppables line.
“Same fun shape, now with a new look... and flavor! Find our new bags and NEW Lay's Sweet Potato Poppables Sea Salt at a store near you 🤗,” Lay’s wrote, per the post.
ICYMI, Poppables were first released in 2017, as a healthier alternative to Lay’s fan-favorite chips. Instead of being deep fried like most chips, Poppaples are pressure-cooked similar to popcorn, which gives them that airy but crunchy taste. Add a bit of salt and it’s *chef’s kiss*.
The Sweet Potato Poppables, specifically, are made with real sweet potatoes and sprinkled with sea salt—no artificial flavors or colors added. Unfortunately, they only come in standard sizes (5-ounce), so no family bags for us. But, take a tip from me: just buy three of the standard bags and boom—you’ve got your very own family-sized stash. It’s Girl Math™.
And I’m not the snacker excited about this new Poppables flavor (though I’m probably the only one buying three bags at once). “Yum! Need to try the sweet potato and digging the new packaging 😍,” one fan wrote. “WANTTTT I WANT,” read another comment.
Even Subway (yes, the official Subway account) chimed in: “Can already tell the crunch goes crazy 😍😍.” After a trip to my local grocer, I can confirm that, yes, the crunch does go crazy.
While most fans (raises hand) are hyped for the launch, some aren’t as keen on the flavor. And I get it—sweet potato chips can be a hit or miss. But, it also doesn’t help that some people are holding out for a return of their favorite flavors. “Bring back the Jalapeños ones!! They're better than these!” read one comment. “Lay's here me out... Put the Honey BBQ on the new Sweet Potato Poppables,” wrote another.
So hey, if Lay’s is listening...bring the people what they want. Because when it comes to chips, we all have our favorites.
