If you’re like me and breakfast is the most important meal of the day (I never skip it), then you know the importance of fluffy scrambled eggs. Meghan Markle seemingly agrees with this sentiment: She shared her approach to making scrambled eggs on her new Netflix show With Love, Meghan.

The eight-part cooking show, released earlier this month, features an episode with Korean-American chef Roy Choi. The food enthusiasts make Korean Fried Chicken, and Choi adds sparkling water to the batter.

"Does the sparkling water just help make the batter extra crisp?" Markle asked chef Choi on the episode, who responded, "Yes, exactly."

The Duchess of Sussex then shared another way she uses sparkling water in her cooking: for her scrambled eggs.

"Do you ever put cold sparkling water in your eggs before you scramble them?" she asked Choi, later adding, "Same sort of effect: It helps them rise, get a little fluffy, it's great. Just a tiny little splash."

Huh! Eggs are a delicious addition to breakfast any way they’re cooked, but who would’ve thought the secret to pillowy, sky-high scrambled eggs was sparkling water? Apparently, a lot of people didn’t, as many of them responded to Markle’s suggestion on social media with sarcastic surprise.

"Cold sparkling water in eggs? Heck no…I put an entire can of Sprite in mine," someone on TikTok commented. Others were totally on board with trying out the approach, with one user referencing the 2004 film Mean Girls, commenting on X: "Meghan Markle adds sparkling water to her eggs to make them fluffy, so now I add sparkling water to my eggs to make them fluffy." Another user on TikTok commented, "My granny puts sparkling water in scrambled eggs sometimes, too."

Obviously, Markle isn’t the first person to add water (or some iteration of it) to eggs. In 2020, Delish asked top chefs across America for their recipe for the perfect eggs, and chef Anne Burrell had the same idea.

"[Water] helps get the eggs nice and fluffy. Milk has milk solids that will brown. I want fluffy, light, lemony yellow looking eggs," she explained.

Delish food editor Taylor Ann Spencer had this to say about the trick: "Water is one of the key ingredients to really light and fluffy scrambled eggs. The water evaporates when it hits the hot pan, helping the eggs to rise and become fluffy as they scramble. I've never personally tried sparkling water, but I can see that the added carbonation might give it even more lift!"
