Another day, another food recall! Riverside Natural Foods Inc., maker of granola bars from the popular brand MadeGood, initiated a recall "out of an abundance of caution" due to the possible presence of metal in some of its granola bars. Initially enforced back in December 2024, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has now elevated the danger level of this recall, and it's a good idea to check your pantries.

In a statement on their website, MadeGood described the metal pieces as "a small, flat brush bristle." They also note that this metal is "highly unlikely to be present" in their products and that they "received seven complaints out of the hundreds of millions of bars sold, and no injuries have been reported."

The recall affects almost two and a half million cases of granola bars, including a large variety of products sold at most major retailers and grocery stores throughout Canada and the U.S., from Target to Walmart, as well as online.

Affected products are: MadeGood's Chocolate Chip Granola Bars, Chocolate Banana Granola Bars, Cookies & Creme Granola Bars, Mixed Berry Granola Bars, Strawberry Granola Bars, Chocolate Drizzled Birthday Cake Granola Bars, Chocolate Drizzled Cookie Crumble Granola Bars, Chocolate Drizzled Vanilla Granola Bars, Chocolate Drizzled Granola Bars Variety Pack, MadeGood Variety Pack, Halloween Chocolate Chip Granola Mini Bars, and Holiday Sprinkles Chocolate Drizzled Granola Mini Bars. You can head to the recall page for specific sell-by dates and UPC codes for the affected products.

A Class II recall isn't the most extreme classification, but it does indicate that "a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote," according to the FDA.

The good news is that if you did purchase any of the affected products, refunds are available where you purchased your granola bars.
