This week, Weight Watchers announced they're offering teenagers between the ages of 13 and 17 free six-week memberships during the summer of 2018 to help "the development of healthy habits at a critical life stage," according to the company's press release.

Because it's well-documented that dieting — particularly at a young age — is a precursor to developing disordered eating habits, the response to Weight Watcher's announcement has been particularly brutal:

And this is just the beginning: New York City-based Balance Eating Disorder Treatment Center is staging a Twitter revolt beginning at noon EST on Saturday, February 10, when they're asking people to tweet #WakeUpWeightWatchers to @WeightWatchers.

Update 2/11: In a statement emailed to Cosmopolitan.com on Saturday, February 10, Weight Watchers wrote, "Our decision to open our program to teens, with the consent or a parent or guardian, is driven by a family-based approach. This is not about encouraging dieting."
