It's been an amazing four years for Chip and Joanna Gaines. Since 2013, the husband-and-wife team went from renovating properties around Waco, Texas to running their home, television, and real estate empire. Now, Chip Gaines, star of HGTV's Fixer Upper and KILZ Primer spokesperson, is set to release a new book this fall, Capital Gaines: Smart Things I Learned Doing Stupid Stuff, which will cover all of the life lessons he's picked up from the people closest to him over the years.

In the spirit of important life lessons, we wanted to know, through it all, what's are the most important things Chip has learned from his wife, Joanna, and their four children, Drake, 12, Ella, 10, Duke, 9 and Emmie, 7? Here's what the proud husband and dad told CountryLiving.com about his family:

Honestly I can sum up all of the lessons I've learned from Jo in one word: Trust. I trust her when it comes to our kids, our business, our show, our home, our projects. All of it. Joanna has great instincts, great ideas and an eye that can't be beat. She is truly fascinating to me in every area of our life together, and I could rattle off at least ninety things that she's the best at and that I've learned from her, but honestly trust, above all else, is the key. She has my back. And I have hers—in all things.

Without trust, it would be very easy for me to worry about every little thing in all aspects of our lives. But you can't operate that way, especially in business. You need someone on your side. And if there's one thing I know for certain, Jo is on my side.

I like a lot of what Mother Teresa stood for. She said once, "I can do things you cannot, and you can do things I cannot. Together we can do great things." This reminds me of Jo and me, you know we both have our individual strengths and talents that we bring to the table, but together what we can do is so much better than anything either of us could do on our own.

"I can do things you cannot, and you can do things I cannot. Together we can do great things."

Jo also has taught me a lot about vision. It's easy to walk into a fixer-upper and get overwhelmed by the work to be done. But if you can take a step back and choose to see the potential of a space instead of its problems, you can really begin envisioning what that space could be and how it can bring your family's dreams to life. That's why I partnered with the KILZ brand, as well. We're both dedicated to doing things the right way and giving people the ability to transform their home.

And I've learned so many things from each of my kids, I couldn't list them all, but it never gets old learning a little bit more each day about their unique personalities. Drakey is forward-thinking like I've never seen. He's an innovator. Someday he's going to change the world. I believe that.

Ella is so imaginative and creative. She gets that from her mom. Duke is kind and compassionate. He makes friends faster than anyone I've ever met. And Emmie Kay is sweet, and she's also bold and a bit of a firecracker. She isn't afraid to be different or to stick out. In fact, she welcomes it.
