The Busby family, stars of the TLC reality show OutDaughtered, call League City, Texas home—and have spent the last week dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. League City, located just outside of Houston, was ravaged by floods from the destructive storm, which has caused up to $180 billion in damages across Texas.
Parents Adam and Danielle Busby, parents to six kids, including a set of quintuplets, have kept fans updated about how they were affected by the storm. They have also urged viewers to contribute what they can to Harvey relief. Danielle tells CountryLiving.com via email that while their home was spared, her mother, MiMi, lost everything in the floods—and now they're working on supporting her, and their community at large.
How is your family doing now after Harvey?
We thankfully made it through the storm safely with no water in our house, as well as both my sisters' homes. Unfortunately, MiMi's house did not make it. She [was] flooded [with] about 1-2 feet [of water] in her house.
Did your house get any damage from the storm?
We are very, very fortunate to not have any damage to our home.
How did the storm affect your neighborhood and larger community?
The town flooded pretty bad. Lots of homes and businesses took on water. Gas stations are running [out] or already are out of gas. Grocery stores [are] open limited hours due to low supplies. Lots of shelters have opened up.
It seems like MiMi's house took a lot of damage from the flooding. What happened? Is it beyond repair?
MiMi's home is in an older neighborhood and it seems to be the reservoir for all the newer subdivisions that have gone up around. The neighborhood has never really flooded before but Harvey wiped that whole area out with water. The water couldn't drain and it took about four days until we could actually get to the house. We have had to throw out everything she owns, rip floors up, pull all the paneling off the walls, rip cabinets out...the house has gone down to the studs.
How is MiMi doing now?
She is holding on...it's hard though. MiMi's house flooded in Lake Charles a few years ago and she lost a lot of stuff then. She was just getting off to a better place after the change of moving to League City, finding a job, then moving into this house, and now it's all gone. There was a lot of memorabilia that we just had to throw out, so it's hard seeing pieces of her life just get tossed in a pile of trash.
How much do your kids understand about the hurricane and the damage it caused?
The kids were not really aware of what was happening with the storm. Obviously the babies are too young, being they are only two. This was Blayke's first hurricane experience and so she was not too aware of what a hurricane was until the aftermath.
Once we were able to get out of the house, I wanted Blayke to understand how fortunate we were to not have had any damage during Harvey. I took her to volunteer in MiMi's neighborhood to see the devastation and understand what the hurricane did to our community. We pray every night for the city and all those who have lost so much.
Is there anything else you want people to know?
There has been so much devastation to our city and so many people [and] families that are close to our hearts that have lost everything. it has been amazing to see how our community has come together and support one another.
Danielle's husband, Adam, also responded to a question from CountryLiving.com.
Adam, you've been open on the show about your struggles with postpartum depression. How have you felt about the reactions to your story?
I have been extremely encouraged by the reactions that I've gotten by opening up about my journey with postpartum depression. The overwhelming majority of comments have been positive and thankful that I have chosen to open up about such a taboo subject on a national stage. I have gotten countless messages from other dads that my story has specifically touched them and has helped in opening up a dialogue between them and their spouse, which has led to the first step in them getting help.
