About 1.3 billion tons of food, a third of all food produced for humans every day, is never eaten. And American families throw out around 25 percent of the food and drinks they buy. That's according to Anthony Bourdain's newest film project, WASTED! The Story of Food Waste, which is dedicated to showing what we all can do to stop throwing out perfectly good food.
Bourdain serves as executive producer and narrator of the documentary, and appears at the beginning and end of the film's first trailer, which was released Thursday. Other chefs like Mario Batali and Danny Bowien appear in the movie, which showcases how food waste can be used to create incredibly delicious meals.
"I'm not an activist but the intent of this film aligns with something that's very much personal," Bourdain said in a press release. "I came up in kitchen regimes where you live by an absolute rule of using everything and wasting nothing, and of course, as a traveler, I see again and again how circumstances force people to cook incredibly well with the often very little food available to them."
Directed by Anna Chai and Nari Kye, the documentary also showcases innovative new ways to deal with food waste, like a disposal plan that reduced waste by 30 percent in South Korea and a way to feed waste to pigs in Japan.
"One film isn't going to cure all of society's ills but if a few people start thinking about what they're eating for dinner in a different way or think twice about throwing out what is often the best stuff, it's a good day," Bourdain added in his statement. Now clean your plate, or else.
WASTED! The Story of Food Waste opens in theaters and video on demand on October 13.
