More and more sugary snack companies are branching out into new flavors, from white chocolate M&M's to Cadbury chocolate-covered Oreos. But Kit Kat's latest flavor experiment is something quite untraditional: cough drop-flavored Kit Kats, released in, where else, Japan.

Japanese Kit Kat flavors are bolder than the brand's stateside fare; for every "traditional" combo like strawberry or chestnut, there are some cultural wildcard staples like edamame beans and Japanese sweet potato. But this cough drop flavor isn't a euphemism for, say, some kind of minty flavor. Instead, white chocolate is mixed together with actual throat lozenge powder.

So what did inspire the combo? Why, the ongoing FIFA World Cup matches. If this doesn't really make sense, consider that the face of these cough drop Kit Kats is Yasutaro Matsuki, a longtime Japanese soccer commentator whose job requires him to keep his voice in mint condition. His promo for the brand is... inspirational:

Alas, these flavors are only going to be in stock (in Japan) until September 10, so if you've got a cross-Pacific dessert hook-up, now's the time to flex it.
