Social media and the news can make the world seem downright inhospitable. People are at each other's throats on Twitter, body shaming each other on Instagram, and duking it out on Facebook. This gloomy trend has led to more than 60 percent of social media users in America seeing negative posts daily, and 10 percent have cried because of mean things said, according to a study conducted by Wakefield Research.

So, to combat all the negativity in the atmosphere, Einstein Bros Bagels has decided to take a stand with its own "Shmear Campaign," and it's giving away free food in the process. (Well, it's part kumbaya, part marketing tool to promote its new Shmearfuls — cream cheese-stuffed bagel balls that look a lot like Bantam Bagels.)

On August 8 only, the company is encouraging all former enemies (or just friends) to "break bagels" together by offering a buy one, get one free deal on an order of Shmearfuls when using the code words "Shmear Joy." If you use the hashtag #ShmearCampaignPromo on Twitter, you can get a BOGO coupon too.

The little bite-sized balls range from 80 to 100 calories each and come in six different flavors. Fulfilling every pretzel lover's fantasy, the pretzel Shmearful is filled with beer cheese. French toast is fittingly filled with maple syrup cream cheese. The other four classic flavors – everything, plain, asiago, and jalapeño cheddar – are all filled with plain cream cheese.
