This country's obsession with fried chicken is real – whether or not it's directly linked to our downfall is for you to decide. Right now, all that matters is that we love it, and we're about to get more of it. After rolling out its spiciest sandwich yet, Kentucky Fried Chicken has revealed that its "finger lickin' good" menu is expanding again. And it features the most important southern flavor — barbecue.
Beginning Monday, July 31, KFC will start serving Smoky Mountain Barbecue chicken tenders. That means adding sweet and smoky sauce to its classic, top-secret recipe.
And while the South is the undisputed heart and soul of all things barbecue, each state believes its sauce reigns supreme. This dish — which will most likely set you back about $7 — attempts to unite BBQ lovers by combining recipes from Memphis and the Carolinas to create a sauce that's smoky, sweet, and tangy, all at the same time.
There is, however, a catch: So far, KFC is only selling the chicken in Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, and Chicago. It's a test to see if the dish will appeal to the masses. If it succeeds, a taste of the Smoky Mountains could be headed your way soon.
A report from Datassential suggests that 95 percent of Americans say they like barbecue, or foods with barbecue sauce. So KFC's new flavor could potentially win big. Meanwhile, Southerners will probably be waiting patiently to see if these suckers are up to the region's standards. So, no pressure.
