In 2015 Whole Foods recalled Papillon Organic Roquefort cheese due to Listeria monocytogenes found on a wheel of cheese, and last year the company called for the recall of Maytag Raw Milk Blue Cheese, also due to Listeria monocytogenes. Unfortunately, there's been another cheese recall.
Last week, Whole Foods recalled Vulto Creamery Ouleout and Miranda soft wash-rind raw milk cheeses from stores in Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut and Maine, and this week the company has expanded the recall.
Raw milk cheeses which might contain listeria have been pulled from nine Whole Foods stores in the northeast. As NJ.com reports, Vulto Creamery Andes, Hamden, and Walton Umber raw milk cheeses have been blamed in the deaths of two people, and have sickened six others.
Whole Foods locations in Clark,NJ and Paramus, NJ are among the stores involved in the recall, as well as three locations in Manhattan and one in Brooklyn. However, none of the deaths or illnesses are attributed to cheese purchased at Whole Food stores.
The recalled cheeses were cut and packaged in clear plastic wrap with scale labels beginning with PLU codes 0200307, 0201357 or 0206308 and "sell by" dates from Jan. 2, to April 2, 2017. The CDC advises that anyone who has the cheese should dispose of it in a sealed plastic bag and wash the refrigerator drawer where the cheese was stored as well as any surfaces which came into contact with it.
