With more than 12,500 stores across 43 states, Dollar General just announced that is experimenting with a new type of chain store, which will be called DGX. Focusing on a smaller format that will offer a customer experience similar to a gas station convenience store, DGX stores will let customers get in and out faster than they would in Dollar General stores.
The first DGX store opened on January 20 in Nashville, TN, and even though it's supposed to be a "smaller" store, it boasts 3,400 square feet of shopping space where customers can browse for an assortment of groceries, pet supplies, snacks, paper products, home cleaning supplies, home decor, and even products in an expanded health and beauty section.
The idea behind the DGX stores is to also offer "instant consumption" items including soda fountain drinks, coffee, and grab-and-go sandwiches.
"We are excited about our new smaller store concept and the opportunity to serve busy, city-dwellers with everyday low prices on the essentials they need in a convenient, easy-to-shop format," said Todd Vasos, Dollar General's CEO. "The DGX format is geared to meet the needs of the millennial shopper, which is an emerging and important part of our customer base and will help us broaden our appeal to attract a new segment of urban customers who put a high premium on value and convenience."
If you don't live in Nashville, be on the lookout for DGX stores popping up in your area soon, because Dollar General will soon be opening a second DGX location in Raleigh, North Carolina.
