The charm of Willy Wonka transcends generations. With a too-fantastical-to-be-real chocolate factory dreamt up from pure imagination, the whimsical character captured the hearts of children across the world for more 50 years, making them wish they could find their very own golden ticket. So it only makes sense that the candy-fueled story written by British novelist Roald Dahl has been turned into not one but two feature-length films. And now it's inspired a Broadway musical.

After debuting on stage in London, the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory musical will open in New York on March 28. Playbillreports that the iconic purple-coated character will be played by two-time Tony Award winner Christian Borle, who appeared most recently in the Gilmore Girls revival.

Between both films that have deliciously depicted Dahl's beloved story, the play has a lot to live up to. First, there are the expansive and intricate color-popping sets decked out with chocolate waterfalls, topsy-turvy Gobstopper machines, and a Wonka-vision lab.

Then there are Gene Wilder's wise cracks and musical numbers, which set the bar pretty high for Johnny Depp—and anyone else to don Wonka's top hat.

And let's not forget about the children's stunts, like Augustus Gloop getting stuck in the chocolate river tube and Violet Bearegarde turning into a blueberry.

Lucky for all Wonka fans, the musical promises delight in its official self-summary: "Charlie Bucket and four other golden ticket winners will embark on a mesmerizing, life-changing journey through Wonka's world of pure imagination. Get ready for chocolate waterfalls, exquisitely nutty squirrels and the great glass elevator, all to be revealed by Wonka's army of curious Oompa-Loompas."
