Ben and Jerry's latest commercial draws striking parallels to our country's—and the world's—current political situation. In fact, it's so spot-on, it hurts.
By opening the two-minute video with "in a land not so far away" and illustrating two polar opposite "political" parties, the brand sets an all-too-familiar scene for us. And while it was published on November 4—four days before the fateful election came to a shocking result—it very accurately depicts our current state of affairs and underlines the issues we face as a divided country. But luckily, according to the ice cream company, there is hope.
In the beautifully animated spot, an angry lemon with a comb-over (it's a wonder they didn't choose an orange but maybe that would have been a bit too pointed) riles up a group of fellow lemons into thinking "zest is best." And when one humble cherry comes along to happily point out "we taste sweeter together," it is immediately shut out and taunted.
Even the music is astoundingly on point. "How am I the only one to see the world a different way?" one line begs. "Shame on me for trying," another lends. It isn't until one lemon reaches out to that forward-thinking cherry that a ripple-effect of peace transcends the land of Coneville.
This is because, as Ben and Jerry's puts it, "we don't live in a one flavor world." We're better together.
The video was produced by the ice cream giant's European branch, which posted the caption: "At Ben & Jerry's, we're concerned that the dominant message we see in society today is one of division... sometimes easy to think the world is becoming increasingly divided. So, we've been thinking about how we can amplify a message of unity & love using the thing we know best: ice cream!"
Here's hoping our world can be just as sweet.
