September and October are the perfect times to go to an apple orchard or cider mill and bask in the glorious fall weather, pick some apples, eat pumpkin-inspired food, and down delicious cider.

Getting E. coli ... not exactly on the list.

For seven people who went to the 39th annual Louisburg Cider Mill festival, that nightmare became a reality. The festival ran on the weekends of September 24 to 25 and October 1 to 2 this year and it was filled with the kind of fall fun you'd expect at this type of event. However, seven fall-festival attendees ended up contracting E. coli, which brought the festival to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the FDA's attention.

However, the initial findings showed that every single sample from the cider mill came back negative for E.coli. So what is going on here? Did the bad batch all get drunk between these attendees consuming it and the testing? We might never know, but this is an important reminder to be aware of when going to local events. Even fall fun can get ruined with a bad batch of apples.
