It's 2016, and women still can't breastfeed their babies in public without being forced to wear the scarlet letter. Luckily, we may have the first step toward real, tangible progress in today's age with the advent of a breastfeeding emoji. Behold its wondrous beauty above.
OK, so it's actually not that beautiful, given the mother doesn't have a head, and the baby has some sort of weird alfalfa sprout growing out of its scalp. Also, eggplant really isn't the most fetching color for a blouse, but still. Progress!
According to People, the emoji was first requested by registered nurse Rachel Lee last month in a proposal she submitted to the Unicode Consortium, the nonprofit that oversees all emoji approvals (yes, this is a real thing).
"The lack of a breastfeeding emoji represents a gap in the Unicode Standard given the prevalence of breastfeeding in cultures around the world, and throughout history," Lee wrote."Three million mothers participate in the activity of breastfeeding in the United States at any given time... [It] occurs at all hours of the the day and night, and text communication is frequently used during these times. This emoji is likely to be used in context for a message such as, 'Up at 3 a.m. with baby [breastfeeding emoji].'"
Here's to hoping the emoji gods come through on this one. 🙏.
