We already knew that our waiters and waitresses can make us gain weight and that there are some serious cardinal rules to follow when out to eat. But now there might be something else to worry about while at a restaurant.
One man in Colorado claims he has been ripped off by his server not once, not twice, but three times, getting his credit card charged for more than he signed on the bill. According to Fox21News, the second time a Texas Roadhouse server overcharged Colorado Springs resident Doug Woodward, he told the manager and discovered the waitstaff had changed the amount to receive a larger tip. After that, he swore off that location of the chain for a while—only to return a year later and have the same exact issue happen.
"I think the odds of being struck by lightning are probably better than this happening to the same person three times at Texas Roadhouse," Woodward told the news site.
Apparently Woodward and his wife's check came to $105.01 after treating their friends to dinner. The couple tipped $10, signing the credit card receipt for a total of $115.01. According to Woodward, their bank statement did not reflect this; instead it was charged $123.01.
"Clearly there was a small zero added to the zero here and a straight line drawn through the 5 to try to make that appear to be an 8," said Woodward. "We are on a budget like no one's business. For us to do this, that was huge, and for her to take advantage of us like that and we even told her that we were vets. We asked about the military discount and so she knew that we were vets."
We have to ask, though: Why would you rack up over $100 and then only tip 10 percent? If you're on a tight on cash, then 1) don't treat your friends to dinner and 2) make sure you budget enough for a proper tip.
In response to these claims, Texas Roadhouse issued an official statement on September 20:
"After our investigation, we confirmed that Mr. Woodward's receipt was tampered with by one of our employees. The employee has been terminated and we are refunding the full amount of his bill to Mr. Woodward."
But in a strange twist of events, the company came back late last week to say that they were scammed by Woodward. In a statement released by spokesman Travis Doster, Texas Roadhouse said:
"Sadly, we have discovered this was a scam. We have rehired the server, banned this gentleman for life from any Texas Roadhouse, and are considering legal action."
Well damn.
