If you live in a state that issues deposits for returning plastic and glass bottles, then you know the slight tinge of frustration that comes with paying an extra 5 cents per bottle at checkout. Because there's no way you're going to drag all those empty bottles back to the store; you'll just recycle them (hopefully) instead. If somehow you're dedicated enough, you round 'em up and collect your cash.

One Michigan man did just that, but also happened to take a page out of the Seinfeld screenplay and went a little too far with his can collecting scheme. If you're a fan of the show, you know that Kramer is known for his hair-brained ideas. And one of the most ridiculous is when Newman teams up with him to scam the bottle deposit system. Here's what they came up with:

In Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York, you get five cents back per bottle. In Michigan, however, you can get ten cents back on each. So they decide to load up a truck with as many cans and bottles as possible, then bring them cross-country to Michigan to profit from it.

On the show, the duo gets side-tracked to help Jerry get back his stolen car. In reality, the man who attempted to get away with this same shotty plan was pulled over for speeding and got caught.

The New York Daily News reports that Brian Everidge now faces a $5,000 fine and up to five years in prison after he was caught with more than 10,000 bottles from other states while cruising through Michigan. According to Michigan's Beverage Containers Act, it's illegal to return bottles that were purchased out of state. So the fact that Everidge lives in Michigan doesn't help him there.

What does help him is that he told police he found the bottles in Kentucky but never specified where he was going to return them—giving his attorney the argument that he never actually committed the crime. Only time will tell what the judge at his trial will decide.
