Hold on to your hot sauce, Chipotle fans! Though the popular Mexican chain has had a turbulent year with all that norovirus business, many positive changes have sprung from the rough patch, assuring us that it's OK to eat there once again. First came the possibility of an amped-up drink menu, then the introduction of the long-awaited Chiptopia loyalty program, but the latest news is by far the most exciting.
As of today, customers in select states now have another filling option for their burritos, tacos, salads and bowls—chorizo! The spicy ground sausage made from a mixture of chicken, pork, paprika, toasted cumin and chipotle peppers is the first major introduction since tofu sofritas joined steak, chicken, carnitas and barbacoa on the menu in 2014.
After testing in Kansas City last year, Chipotle is now extending the offering to five more U.S. cities: Columbus, New York (in Manhattan locations), Sacramento, San Diego and one Denver location. Travelers can even chow down on the new item at the Dulles International Airport restaurant. It's like Chipotle is giving us a beautiful, foil-wrapped present for having faith through the hard times.
Chorizo is a popular Mexican ingredient that can be found in dishes like queso fundido, burritos and breakfast burritos, which makes us wonder ... could Chipotle eventually jump on the early-morning menu bandwagon? Either way, here's hoping the second-phase test goes well—according to Chipotle, burrito-lovers across the country could be enjoying the chorizo as early as fall 2016!
