Chick-fil-A, the fried chicken chain known as much for its Polynesian sauce and its controversial anti-gay statements, has just done a surprising thing in Orlando, FL. Following the horrific events of a mass shooting at a gay club early Sunday morning, one nearby location decided to chip in to the city's response effort.
Though it has notoriously been closed on Sundays since 1946, the Lee Vista location of Chick-fil-A sent a small crew of employees to assist law enforcement officials and volunteers donating blood by providing food at the scene, TIME reports.
As most already know, Chick-fil-A has faced harsh criticism over the last few years after the company's CEO spoke out against the LGBT community and opposed gay marriage. So it comes as no surprise that Facebook commenters were both skeptical and supportive of the brand's actions.
One person wrote: "It's a wonderful thing that these few workers did. Very kind. But it was the individuals that should be praised not this company. This company on any other day does not support the gay community ... The company should take a lesson from these individuals and show love, tolerance, and support for fellow human beings all year round and not jump in on the kindness of some workers in the face of tragedy."
While another added: "I was amazed, but not particularly surprised, to see this latest example of this chain's generosity. Last year during the Baltimore riots, the local CFA franchises took great care of all of us when we were working long hours restoring order. You guys rock."
