When it comes to convenience stores, 7-Eleven is pretty dope. I mean, not only does the chain house the king of all frozen fizzy drinks, the Slurpee, it's also offered them at whatever price you like, in whatever vessel we'd like, and sometimes for free. Plus, the store often hands out complimentary coffee and some locations have even started delivering. Kinda hard to top that, wouldn't you say?

Well apparently the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) thought that 7-Eleven could use an upgrade, which is why the convenience store is now offering cash-only tax payment services. If this sounds a little sketchy to you at first, keep in mind that the IRS made this announcement on its website, explaining that it makes tax paying easier for those who might not have a bank account or credit card. It will be available at more than 7,000 7-Eleven locations in 34 states, with most stores open 24 hours every day.

"Taxpayers have many options to pay their tax bills by direct debit, a check or a credit card, but this provides a new way for people who can only pay their taxes in cash without having to travel to an IRS  Taxpayer Assistance Center," IRS Commissioner John Koskinen said in a release.

If you're interested in taking advantage of this service, visit IRS.gov/payments and select the cash option, where you'll then enter all of your information. Here's how it works:

  • Taxpayers will receive an email from OfficialPayments.com confirming their information.
  • Once the IRS has verified the information, PayNearMe sends the taxpayer an email with a link to the payment code and instructions.
  • Individuals may print the payment code provided or send it to their smart phone, along with a list of the closest 7-Eleven stores.
  • The retail store provides a receipt after accepting the cash and the payment usually posts to the taxpayer's account within two business days.
  • There is a $1,000 payment limit per day and a $3.99 fee per payment.

Though the deadline has been extended to April 18 this year, the IRS recommends taxpayers wanting to pay in cash not wait too long; because the PayNearMe service involves a three-step process, you could end up paying interest and penalty charges if you don't start the process until this weekend. Still, good work, 7/11—er, 7-Eleven.
