Remember that pre-Bridesmaids, pre-Spy, pre-Boss time that Melissa McCarthy played the beloved and oh-so-talented chef Sookie in a little town called Stars Hollow? Yeah, turns out she's an even better actress than we thought, because her real-life culinary prowess leaves something (and by something we mean a lot) to be desired.
While appearing on Stephen Colbert's The Late Show on Tuesday night along with her husband, filmmaker and fellow actor Ben Falcone, McCarthy revealed to Colbert that she and her family are pretty big fans of the cooking show Chopped, and that she would love to be a contestant on the show if she could. Not one to pass up a perfectly good opportunity for silly shenanigans, Colbert proposed having the couple compete on The Late Show's (very, very brief) version of the popular cooking challenge: Smooshed.
Armed with the ingredients in their baskets—saltine crackers, marshmallows, and bacon bits—as well as a "pantry" comprised of random ingredients from the break room fridge, McCarthy and Falcone were given just one-minute to create a dish that could "wow" Colbert. The results: frantically assembled "bacon bit marshmallow saltines, with just a little bit of pickle for taste" and "Tuscan-influenced rustic hash" that somehow manages to use peanut butter and mayonnaise. This is even better than that time McCarthy killed it in her supermarket skit on SNL.
Kudos to McCarthy and Falcone for thinking outside of the box and keeping their cool under pressure—just kidding, McCarthy did neither of those things—but if it's all the same to them, we'll be keeping our marshmallows on our s'mores, our peanut butter with our jelly, and our crackers with cheese.
