While Oreos are famous for their original chocolate-and-cream rendition, the sandwich cookies are also beloved by fans because they're continually offered in new, sometimes quirky, limited-edition flavors like cotton candy, cinnamon bun, and watermelon. But the latest iteration of the treat is laced with matcha, a type of creamy Japanese green tea that's totally taking over the culinary scene across the world. And the resulting cookie looks incredible.
Filled with a brilliant, almost electric, green tea-infused cream, the Oreos are exclusively available in (where else?) Japan. Not only are we jealous that the trendy tea has made its way into Oreos across the ocean, but we also wish our Oreos came in individually wrapped sleeves à la Girl Scout cookies.
Though they're only in Japan right now, they are widely available at sweet shops and grocery stores across the country for about 238 yen ($2.10), which means you might be able to snag a bag online or ask a wanderlust friend to pick some up.
If you're looking at these wondering why anyone would ever want to layer crispy chocolate cookies with green tea, think again. Matcha and chocolate is actually a classic pairing, with Japanese desserts like matcha cream puffs filled with chocolate mousse while chocolate-matcha cakes have become pretty popular, even in the U.S.
Rocket News 24 was able to acquire a bag of the new flavor, saying that the cream center was "rich, milky, and buttery with a sweet flavor that whirls around the mellow bitterness of green tea." The wafer cookies are dark chocolate, which only complements the sweet matcha notes. Sounds like a hit to us.
