Just a few weeks ago, Twitter exploded with outrage over Whole Foods selling pre-peeled oranges in plastic containers. "If only nature would find a way to cover these oranges so we didn't need to waste so much plastic on them," one viral tweet read. Now another grocery store chain is under fire for selling peeled avocados in both shrink-wrap and cardboard packaging. And its customers are not keeping quiet. Instead, they've taken to social media to lash out about the waste.
At Sobeys, a Canadian supermarket, Calaco peeled Hass avocado halves are on store shelves for $3.99. And one Facebook post—calling the product wasteful and expressing disappointment in the store for carrying it—has sparked a red-hot debate online, the Toronto Metro reports.

"Avocado's [sic] have their own perfect, compostable, wrapping," customer Christine Kizik posted on the Sobeys Facebook page. She also asks for a response from the brand. Sobeys did, in fact, respond. "Thanks for sharing this with us Christine. This product was developed for people who might be new to using avocados and for a little more convenience. It eliminates the guess work when it comes to ripeness and any challenges if you are not familiar with peeling and seeding a fresh avocado. The packaging is there to keep the fresh wholesome appearance and quality of the avocado without it browning prior to consumption. Hope this answers your question and if you do have any more you can certainly reach out to our team at customer.care.ontario@sobeys.com," the brand wrote back in a comment.
This did not sit well with Kizik and a slew of other customers, who noted that the product isn't as fresh as picking up a conventional avocado and that the pre-packaged snack is "a shameful and ridiculous step backwards" in terms of sustainability.
And the arguments are still raging on as of this publication, with some fans of the chain complaining about its alleged poor choice to carry the Calaco item and others thanking them for the convenience. We have to admit that we're a bit confused. Isn't one of the best parts of eating avocado the weirdly satisfying cuts and scoops you make into it?
Our advice: Stick to whole fruit and vegetables from now on and quit being lazy. There are plenty of other shortcuts you can take in the kitchen.
