Your next order of French fries might come with some serious perks. Nation's Restaurant News reports that McDonald's is working on a loyalty program that will give rewards to frequent customers.
"We're working on a customer-designed loyalty program that we think will be as good as there is out there in the marketplace," McDonald's USA president Mike Andrews said at a conference Wednesday. In many markets, McDonald's already has a loyalty program for drinks; if you live in certain areas, you can get a free McCafé drink after purchasing five.
The loyalty plan will be built into the chain's smartphone app, and could launch late this year or early in 2017. Execs aren't saying much, but folks think it might be linked to how many visits you make to McDonald's every month, and would likely launch limited time deals for loyal customers. And if you haven't been attending in a while, the app will know and give you coupons to entice you back. Right now, the app only lets you look at the menu and find nearby restaurants, so this would be a major upgrade.
As TheStreet notes, McDonald's is majorly late to the game when it comes to a loyalty program. Starbucks already has more than 11 million rewards members, and Dunkin' Donuts has more than 4 million in its own program. But since the McDonald's app has been downloaded around 7.5 million times already, there's clearly a demand for some free stuff with your next lunch order.
