We're not afraid to admit we have a certain soft spot for McDonald's—the tasty food is always a cheap and easy option on a busy day. But it turns out you may have to travel further than your local Mickey D's to find the restaurant chain's top menu.
After visiting McDonald's locations in 53 different countries—and writing more than 340 reviews on his blog "McDonald's Around the World"—James McGowan has dubbed Sri Lanka's food the absolute best. He recently told Business Insider that in Sri Lanka, you'll find a tiny but interesting McDonald's menu, with only a couple of sandwiches.
But while the menu isn't long, McGowan still has a favorite dish: The seeni sambol sandwich, a breakfast item released in March 2014, which features a folded egg and melted cheese on a hamburger bun. The whole thing is topped with senni sambol, a spicy relish made from onion and cured tuna.
McGowan offers a more descriptive explanation of the sandwich on his blog:
I took my first bite, and before I could distinguish any noticeable flavours, I was hit with a mouthful of spice! Immediately after the spice, you were hit with strong but very pleasant dried fish taste. After I looked up the recipe for Seeni Sambal online, I found that its specifically "Maldivian Fish" which is type of cured tuna. The Seeni Sambal Burger was also heavy on the red onions, which are traditionally cooked in coconut oil with garlic, sugar and tamarind. The sugar gave the sauce a required stickiness, but not enough to make it sweet at all. Since the Sambol was so flavourful, that I hardly noticed there was cheese in there was well.
Throughout his journey to different McDonald'ses around the world, McGowan has also tasted dishes like tuna pies in Thailand and crab-coquette burgers in Japan. We guess this is one way to explore the local cuisine while traveling!
