With the return of all-day breakfast, McDonald's has been riding high on a wave of boosted sales, rising popularity, and creative (albeit sometimes strange) new menu items. The latest among its innovations is a Southern-fried favorite: chicken and waffles.
According to Columbus Business First, 11 locations of the fast-food chain are testing the Chicken McGriddle, a crispy fried chicken patty sandwiched between two maple-syrup–infused pancake buns. But don't expect a nationwide corporate roll-out anytime soon. Right now, the brand is toying with this idea in Ohio only, now through March 27.
The sweet-and-savory sandwich is the brainchild of Brian Mortellaro, who owns eight McDonald's locations in the Columbus, OH area. "It's a chicken-and-waffles taste," he told the newspaper. "I just think that's something that isn't out there right now."
Though we'd have to disagree with his sentiment of uniqueness. Maybe someone saw our brilliant chicken tenders and hot cakes concept that we came up with back in April, when we first heard that McDonald's would start offering breakfast all day.
But no matter its origins, we're eager to see if this creation makes the cut for menus across the country. And apparently that doesn't solely depend on sales. According to Mortellaro, the biggest influence will be consumer surveys. If customers say they like the taste and would order another, the product could get a larger test run around Central Ohio this year. From there it's on to more testing before a national operation rolls out. In the meantime, we guess you just have to order a sausage McGriddle and any crispy chicken item on the menu (and simply swap the proteins) to get your own chicken-and-waffles experience at Mickey D's.
