Visual artist Kevin Abosch's biggest success didn't come from a stunning picture of Johnny Depp or Yoko Ono. No, his highest-selling portrait featured a single Irish potato that reportedly sold for $1.08 million to a European businessman, who caught a glimpse of the spud at a dinner in Abosch's Parisian home.
Normally, the celebrity visual artist, known for his photography work, sells his art for $500,000 or less. But after a few glasses of wine with the businessman, his spud-tastic portrait, named "Potato #345," made him a cool million in no time.
To Abosch, a potato is far from just a potato. "I see commonalities between humans and potatoes that speak to our relationship as individuals within a collective species," Abosch told CNN. "Generally, the life of a harvested potato is violent and taken for granted. I use the potato as a proxy for the ontological study of the human experience."
You may not feel the same emotional connection that Abosch does to the vegetable, but the spud is certainly special. The picture of it is the 15th most expensive photo to ever be sold.
That's one photogenic potato!
