The seventh season of Jerry Seinfeld's web series, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, features someone who usually isn't that funny. President Obama kicked off the season by inviting Seinfeld for a cup of joe at the White House.
The show normally focuses on, well, comedians, but Seinfeld says that the President "has gotten off just enough funny lines to qualify for getting on this show." And he gets a few quips in this time, too. The video is only available on the streaming site Crackle, but here are a few highlights:
Seinfeld sneaks up on the President while he's working in the Oval Office. The photo (above) made official White House photographer Pete Souza's list of favorites for the year. And in a post-credits clip, Obama is shown telling a Secret Service guard not to shoot Seinfeld in the process. "Our poll numbers would go down if we did harm to Jerry Seinfeld," he said in his characteristic deadpan.
The President isn't allowed to drive a classic car past the White House gates. When Seinfeld tries driving, a guard tells him, "You're a comedian in a car going nowhere." And when Obama tries, he gets a more respectful, but still firm no. So they get into "The Beast," President Obama's presidential vehicle, and grab a coffee at the White House instead.
Little kids love the President because his name is funny. "I do really well with the 0-8 demographic. They love me. Partly because I think my ears are big, and so I look a little like a cartoon character. And little kids love saying my name. But it's one big word. It's Barackobama, like a Nickelodeon thing."
The President's morning routine starts with a wake-up call, like in a hotel. He then gets out of bed, brushes his teeth, shaves, puts on workout clothes. "Yeah, I believe in shaving before the workout, because that's how I do it and I don't really need a reason."
The President is quick with a funny comeback. What's his most embarrassing president moment? "This may be it." What percentage of world leaders are completely insane? "A pretty sizable percent."
The President's life regret is not getting a cameo on Seinfeld. "I've always wanted to be on a show about nothing, and here I am."
