UPDATE: July 15, 2016 at 5:25pm

The long-awaited Hello Kitty Café is finally up and running, serving customers sweets and drinks out of a bright pink shipping container at Irvine Spectrum's Big Wheel Court in Orange County, CA. The décor is adorable, as expected, with a pink and white awning, Sanrio graphics on the walls and a neon sign featuring the cute character we love, perched on top.

The café is a pop-up that will remain at the shopping center for a full year, but we can already tell it's going to be pack until further notice—since opening this morning, the café has announced that it's reached capacity, closing the line for the day. Make sure to queue up early!

Once inside or on the miniature patio, guests can sip strawberry mint lemonade or Portola Coffee and chow down on sweets like tiny apple pies and strawberry streusel pastry puffs.

Grand opening festivities will take place through Sunday, July 17, but you can keep the celebrations going all year by picking up a sprinkle-covered birthday cake topped with a sweet red bow!

The Hello Kitty restaurant in Hong Kong is already feeding the kitty-craze and it's about time the US got on the bandwagon. Once only a food truck in Southern California, the Hello Kitty Café will make its debut in a temporary shipping container at the Irvine Spectrum Center toward the end of the month, the Los Angeles Times reports. Luckily though, Hello Kitty's parent company, Sanrio, already has plans to plant roots in a more permanent space on the West coast—then we'll never have to say goodbye to these adorable kitty-themed desserts.

The cafe will not only serve irresistible doughnuts, macarons, mini cakes and Hello Kitty cookies, but it will also feature a daily tea service, and sell coffee and sodas. Though the majority of the treats will be inspired by the bow-wearing cartoon cat, rest assured you'll be able to find select sweets featuring other fan favorites, like My Melody, Keroppi, Little Twin Stars and Chococat.

Until the café opens, you can find many of the same treats, as well as cookie sets, t-shirts and mugs, at the Hello Kitty Café Truck, which roams California.

We only have a few unanswered questions: When will we get some Hello Kitty action on the east coast? And more importantly, why isn't Hello Kitty actually a cat?
