Instant coffee and soda makers from Keurig and Sodastream have made our lives insanely easier and more efficient. But no one has thought about freshly brewed beer on demand. That is until the minds at Pico Brew came together to develop a countertop brewer for those who want their favorite craft beers fresh from the tap and entirely at their disposal.
After developing the pint-size Pico, the developers started crowd-funding on Kickstarter to put the gadget into mass production. This chunky mini brewer (which weighs 30 pounds but is only 12 inches wide, according toBloomberg) is essentially a Keurig for beer, brewing the mash in about two hours and allowing you to adjust both the alcohol and bitterness levels. From there, you add yeast to your keg, then let the suds sit for a week. Finally, just carbonate and chill overnight before pouring your home-brewed pints. You'll have 5 liters to get through, so invite a few friends over.
And, thanks to partnerships with more than 50 craft breweries, you have access to freshly brewed, top-notch beers from the likes of Rogue and Dogfish Head in your own kitchen. While the price seems steep up front, Pico is relatively cheap compared to its home-brew competitors, including MiniBrew (from $1,850) and Brewie (from $1,599). If you back the project, you can get a Pico with brewing packets for anywhere between $500 and $649. Once the unit hits production, it will retail for $1,000. So if you're interested at all, you might want to act now.
Creators emphasize that with Pico, consumers have access to small-batch quality, lesser-known brews that span the country, and a nearly effortless, approachable process for home brewing. And it's hard to argue with that.
