Last week the internet freaked over the now famous pizza-toting rat in New York City—and then again at its slice-loving partner in crime inside a subway station. But now there's a not-so-funny rodent making headlines for its appearance inside a Subway restaurant sandwich. In Lincoln City, OR, one man found a dead rodent in his Italian sub.

Matt Jones noticed the dead animal in his friend's sandwich and posted a photo to Facebook with the caption, "Look at that beast of a mouse in the spinach at Subway today. Good thing I didn't bite into it! The manager was in shock!" Jones was immediately given a refund and health officials were brought in to investigate.

So if you've eaten at Subway in Lincoln City and ordered spinach, it could have been tainted by a dead rodent. However the state health department reports that no one is in danger of getting sick. After consulting with physicians, health inspectors say that while it's not appetizing, there's very little risk of illness from consuming greens under these circumstances.

USA Today reports that the incident occurred on Thursday, October 6 around 2 p.m. Jones told the paper that a Subway employee made his chicken teriyaki sandwich with spinach and then moved onto his friend Jay's Italian sub. "I got my drink, turned around and they were in shock like something happened," Jones said. "There was a mouse in there. It was gross."

Subway headquarters responded almost immediately with the following statement: "As soon as the customer alerted the owner about what happened, they were immediately given a full refund and an investigation was launched. To be cautious, all of the products in the sandwich unit were disposed of and a thorough cleaning took place, in which the Health Department gave the restaurant a clean bill of health. There were no other complaints made."

Of course this raises concern about an infestation problem and whether another disgusting event like this will happen again. After a thorough search throughout the entire restaurant, health inspectors determined that "the rodent problem did not come from inside the facility," later adding that the bagged spinach from a third-party supplier was likely the culprit. It remains unclear whether that's supposed to reassure us.
