Costco receives lots of praise for its popular bakery items and can't-miss deals. But its pre-packaged sushi hasn't always received the best reviews.
That could soon change, though, if a rumor about the big box store is true. Earlier this week, a Reddit user by the name of @Independent_Laugh_11 posted a photo on the website of what appears to be a fresh sushi counter inside a Costco. High above the counter is a banner that reads "Kirkland Signature Sushi."
The poster went on to reveal that the photo was taken at Costco’s flagship warehouse in Issaquah, Washington, a location that's home to numerous in-store tests.
"Employee saw me taking a picture and told me it opens this coming Friday, 6/9. Can’t wait to try it! Hoping it’s much better than the pre-packaged variety they’ve sold in the past," the Redditor wrote.
In-store sushi counters aren't an entirely new concept for the store. Costco reportedly already has fresh sushi counters at locations in Hawaii and Japan, in addition to pre-packaged sushi. Interestingly enough, several people who've visited the sushi counters at Costcos in Hawaii and Japan chimed in with their experiences.
"We’ve had Japan Costco sushi on multiple occasions- that’ll be the bar, for us," one person wrote.
"I tried Costco sushi from Honolulu store, it was terrible as well. We ate them cold and the rice was pretty hard. Whole Foods sushi is better than this," another user wrote.
"I honestly haven’t seen a single person say the Costco Sushi is good. I’ve been looking forward to it, but after the reviews on here, not so much," wrote another skeptic on Reddit.
"In Japan, it IS amazing. In Mexico (only other place I’ve tried it) it was NOT. I expect the continental US offering to be somewhere in between," a well-traveled Costco fan commented.
"I think people may be forgetting that pre-packed grocery store sushi is gonna be different than ordering from a restaurant. If I want good sushi, I am going to go to a local place down the street from me, not Costco," another user chimed in.
Would you be willing to try a fresh maki roll from a Costco sushi counter, or are you sticking to the bakery section?
