The internet collectively gasped—and, okay, some people said, "don't knock it 'til you try it, bruh"—when photos of people chowing down on Lucky Charms studded with ice went viral, but new research from Kellogg's makes the idea of chilling your cereal seem tame.
In a survey of 2,000 people, about one in 10 people pour orange juice or coffee directly into their cereal. The concept itself makes sense: You're always on the go, and if you like a jolt of caffeine or Vitamin C in the morning, why not cut out the middle man and get your boost while eating breakfast? We can applaud the effort, but given how acidic OJ can be, we have to wonder how it'd pair with most cereals—particularly sugary ones.
If you're totally grossed out by that news, it may be because you're well past your dorm-living days (and you've subconsciously put bizarre food combinations for convenience's sake on your Murtaugh List of "Sh*t I'm Too Old to Do," a la How I Met Your Mother). The survey found that adding a little Tropicana to your morning cereal is most common among college students: 1 in 5 admitted to doing it.
Then again, maybe you're unfazed by it. You could be part of the 10 percent of people who gets extra-creative with cereal, crowning your Breakfast of Champions with hard-boiled eggs, mayo, ketchup, mustard, hot sauce or chili powder.
Yup, those are all things people have said they've used as a cereal mix-in or topping.
These unexpected twists on cereal could be the result of late-night binging—or drunk-eating in general, when all rational thought goes out the window in favor of a more primal, Homer-Simpson-esque, "must-eat-all-the-food-now" impulse. Three-fifths of college students said they like to eat cereal after 10 p.m., and it was cited as a more popular late-night snack than pizza and leftovers.
This study was conducted before Pizza Hut unveiled its breadstick-crust pizza, so that may change in the months to come. Don't worry—we'll be monitoring the situation closely, and keeping you posted with any new developments. We've got you.
