Everyone can agree spilling coffee is the worst, but spilling a brand new coffee you haven't even taken the first sip of is an absolute day-ruiner. For this New Jersey woman, however, dropping her coffee in the Dunkin' Donuts parking lot led her to file a lawsuit that rewarded her with an insane amount of money.
While en route back to her car on January 19, 2012, Maria Marsala was carrying a tray of several coffees from a Dunkin' Donuts location in Highland Park, NJ when she tripped over an exposed spike in the parking lot. The spike, which was part of a dislodged curb stop, caused her to spill her hot coffee all over her face and neck.
In addition to slight burns, Marsala also injured her hand and knee during the fall.
According to USA Today, she filed a lawsuit against Dunkin' Donuts, the operators of the franchise, and the owners of the strip mall where the coffee shop is located.
Her attorney, Ed Rebenack, noted that basic standards for parking lot maintenance are in place for the protection and safety of the general public. He told CNBC that "allowing a metal spike to protrude out of the asphalt clearly violates these standards. Although it is never a replacement for health, Ms. Marsala is hopeful that the settlement will serve to remind business owners that their customer's safety should always be a priority."
The suit was scheduled to go to trial this month, but Marsala and the coffee chain settled the case for a whopping $522,000 instead.
Marsala is receiving over half a million dollars for tripping and spilling some coffee. Do you know how many morning she can fuel with macchiatos and maple-bacon donuts with that much money? It's enough cash to buy more than 275,000 medium hot coffees—although she probably won't be returning to her local DD any time soon.
