Even though summer barbecue season is pretty much over, anybody who's anybody knows that pulled pork is always appropriate—Wendy's did just started topping its french fries with the hearty stuff, after all. And though the slow-cooked crowd pleaser is likely a fan favorite among the carnivores at your tailgate parties, what are the vegetarians stuck with? Crudites? Come on.
It turns out, it doesn't have to be that way. Jackfruit, a spiky, dino-sized tree fruit native to Southeast Asia, reportedly takes on a pulled pork-like profile after just several hours in a slow cooker. Herbivores, rejoice!
But its meaty characteristics aren't all jackfruit has going for it. The miracle fruit, which can weigh anywhere from 10 to 100 pounds, grows in abundance (a single tree can churn out up to 150 jackfruit) and is loaded with vitamins. If introduced worldwide, it could have some serious world-hunger ending potential.
Unfortunately, it's not easy to track down stateside. The folks at Business Insider were able to locate the fruit in New York City's Chinatown, but it's unclear whether or not they are similarly available throughout the country. If you do manage to get your hands on one, know this: In addition to cooking them up pulled-pork style, you can also fry, juice, and eat them in savory and sweet dishes alike. You could say this fruit is a jack of all trades.
