Desperate times call for desperate measures, even in the slumping fast food industry. That's the idea behind a new Burger King publicity stunt, which reaches out to McDonald's to create a McWhopper. The Wall Street Journal reports that the hybrid burger would pop up on September 21, which is Peace One Day, a day dedicated to global ceasefire and non-violence. What a great time to eat burgers.
Burger King announced the proposal in a full-page newspaper ad and an interactive website, McWhopper.com. In the open letter to McDonald's, Burger King reaches out to end their "beef": "We know we've had our petty differences, but how about we call a ceasefire on these so-called 'burger wars?'"
If McDonald's signs a "peace treaty" on a napkin and agrees to the stunt, the McWhopper would be sold in a pop-up shop in Atlanta, a convenient midway point and "neutral territory" between McDonald's in Chicago and Burger King in Miami. The uniforms and packaging would be half-McDonald's and half Burger King. The future is now, indeed.
McDonald's CEO Steve Easterbrook wrote on Facebook that they'll "be in touch," but it's not looking good so far. "And every day, let's acknowledge that between us there is simply a friendly business competition and certainly not the unequaled circumstances of the real pain and suffering of war," Easterbrook wrote. Well, that just got dark.
