We've all been in situations where the service in a restaurant is so, shall we say, subpar, that we're inclined to leave an aggressively low tip. But while most of us are ultimately won over by common decency, a table of eight people who ate at D'Jais Bar & Grill in Belmar, New Jersey last week decided to go the other way when they not only stiffed the waitress on a $112 bill but left a cruel "LOL" scrawled into the tip line, along with "1 hour for food" by way of explanation.
Last night, I was stunned by this receipt that was left for me by a party of eight people. I would have preferred a "$0"...Posted by Jessica Corinne on Tuesday, 18 August 2015
The waitress, a 20-year-old Rutgers University student named Jessica Jones, took to her Facebook page to lament about the extremely rude note, saying she "would have preferred a "$0" tip than a "LOL" tip, but as a waitress, bad tips and harsh notes are all part of the job."
She also reminded readers that service staff only make $2.50 an hour, and thereby depend on tips to survive, and made the argument that staff shouldn't be punished in the event the kitchen is having an off night.
"I know how aggravating it is to receive a hefty bill when all night you've been wondering why the table that came in after you was served before you. But waiters are mere messengers most of the time, and it's wrong to shoot them, however bad the news."
