One Florida couple has been celebrating their wedding anniversary every year with an unusual, and some might say unappetizing, tradition.
While most couples usually ring in the celebration with dinner and an anniversary gift, Ann and Ken Fredericks spent their special day a little differently; they broke off a piece of their original wedding cake and soaked it in brandy to revive some moisture into the 60-year-old dessert.
Yep, you read that right. Sixty-year-old cake. And no, it was not a replica of the cake recipe used on their wedding day. It was the EXACT fruitcake they ate on their wedding day decades ago.
Their trick for keeping it "fresh" was covering it in plastic wrap and placing it in a coffee can. You'd think it would immediately be tucked away in the freezer, or hey, even the fridge, but think again. They kept it stowed away in a closet at room temperature. If you're going to eat 60-year-old cake you might as well go all out, right?
"Every year, we unwrap it, pour brandy over it—because you need to moisten it—and we break off a piece," Ann said. "Now, our children are appalled that we would be eating something that's 60 years old. But believe me, it's quite tasty, as long as it's got enough brandy on it. And it's never made us sick."
But as you scratch your head in bewilderment or throw up a little in your mouth, the meaning behind this tradition is quite sweet (even if the cake isn't anymore).
"It has lasted us 60 years, and so has the marriage," Ann gushed, "which is much more important than the wedding cake."
We can toast to that!
